"We visited the observatory at Oaxaca about 15 years ago & attempted to locate any member of the Canuto Munoz family. Canuto was once a member of the president's cabinet. We met him through my wife's parents & visited him on their trip to the United States in the early 1960's & again in Mexico City in 1967. "If you enjoy visiting places that are very different from your daily surroundings: THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU, GO TO OAXACA.
We had a wonderful time in Oaxaca. It was our first time there and we were fascinated by the exhuberance of everything. Food, colors, people, natural site & ruins, all with a magical aura, genuinely nice and hospitable. This place is the favorite vacation spot of one of the most reknown chef in the US (Rick Bayless) for its incredible food and wonderul people. Enjoyed all the locally inspired food. We stayed a bit away from the main Zocalo, but still within walking distance of the city centre and found it to be the best of both worlds. For the 1st part of the stay we were in the Camino Real Hotel/Ex--Convent. Highly recommend it for its unique & authentic restoration. Next we went to La Casa de Mis Recuerdos B&B and had a wonderful time. The owners and staff are so nice and helpful. The small & cozy athmosphere was very conducive to restful vacations and making friends with the other guests. The XMAS, NEW YEAR'S & 3 KINGS DAY celebrations are a mixture of catholic religious and pagan ceremonies all very well balanced.
