Chimalapa Jungle

Description
Its name means "Place of Shields": chimali, shield and apan, place. It is a first-class ecological preserve, which people have been trying to safeguard and preserve, in spite of conflicts with a few dwellers who try to burn areas for farming.


Location
• Santa María Chimalapas: Is located 296 miles (477 kilometres) Southeast of the City of Oaxaca via highway 190 to the Isthmus. When you reach the Ventosa crossing, follow highway 185 (to Matías Romero) until you get to Mezquite. Turn right towards Santiago Ixtaltepec. Pass by Lázaro Cardenas and follow the dirt road. To reach the jungle, a 2-hour walking trip is necessary, and to get to the deepest regions, the journey takes eight hours.
