Caves & Caverns

Apoala

Description
To the natives, it is known as Yavi Ko Maa, which in Mixtec language means "cueva de la culebra" (Snake Cave). The same name that appears in the ancient Mixteca manuscripts.

Two spacious galleries, 115 and 130 feet (35 and 40 metres) high, form the interior. The lowest is notable because in its interior, by walking among huge rocks and monticules, one arrives to a large lagoon of unknown depth, whose waters are believed to flow into the Tamazulapan spring.

In these galleries, we can appreciate a profusion of stalactites as well as stalagmites forming different figures. There is one in particular that everyone admires in the form of a mitre, which has been baptised by the villagers as Archbishop’s Stone.

We recommend hiring the services of a guide in the village.

Location
• Santiago Apoala: Is located 76 miles (123 kilometres) Northwest of the City of Oaxaca via highway 131-D to Mexico City. When you reach Nochixtlán turn Northwest and follow the dirt road for another 28 miles (45 kilometres). Approximate travel time: [2:30]
The cave is located due West about 10 minutes from the Apaola community, atop the Yucutotondehui (in Mixtec language "cerro de la peña del cielo") [mountain of the heavenly rock].
